Hi, welcome to the 145th issue of my little newsletter. We moved house (well the newsletter did) and I am pleased you made it with me. I hope you enjoy the new look. In today’s issue a focus on STRATEGY: the mindsets we need, planning processes and ways to explore the future.

Disney’s Creative Strategy
This strategy is based on three main stages; the dreamer, the realist and the critic. 
The mindset or disposition you have is always going to be a good starting point. It is essential when we are doing any type of developmental or strategic work.
The approach from Disney is to explore three dispositions - very similar to De Bono’s thinking hats. Here is a bit more info about each one.
The Dreamer
The first stage allows the team to share their dream without any restrictions or criticism. This helps to build a pool of creative ideas.
The Realist
Based on the first stage, the attendees pretend that the dream is possible and start putting plans to achieve it. The plans aims to turn the imaginary ideas into a manageable action plan.
The Critic
In this session, the team provides a constructive critique for the idea in order to find the weak points and solve it in the final solution.
The article below refers to using a physical place that represents these ideas. I recall another Disney article describing different rooms that a project idea went through to gain feedback.
Changing your physical location is a great way to change your mindset.

The "W Framework" Planning Process
We firmly believe the framework will make planning significantly more effective at almost any organisation.
We are heading into the final term of the academic year here in Australia. Many school leaders will be looking ahead and thinking about strategy and planning processes for next year.
The “W Framework” is a planning process used by Airbnb and Eventbrite and attempts to address one of the biggest problems with strategic planning:
the root cause of nearly all bad planning processes is very simple: a basic lack of understanding of roles — who is responsible for what, when.
Initially Leadership and Team groups are established. This is pretty comparable for schools and education organisations.
The framework is then made up of four steps:
  1. Context: Leadership shares a high-level strategy with Teams
  2. Plans: Teams respond with proposed plans
  3. Integration: Leadership integrates into a single plan, and shares with Teams
  4. Buy-in: Teams make final tweaks, confirm buy-in, and get rolling
I thought this was a refreshing way to look at the development of a strategic plan and so valuable to see how another industry approaches such critical work every three months.

Timecones not Timelines
Futurists think about time differently, and we all could learn from their approach.
Change within education is tricky. Although we often see great ideas pushing the boundaries in pockets. It is much harder to sense larger scale system change happening.
I enjoyed the planning ideas in the article from Amy Webb, not least because of the #timecones! The ideas feel like an intersection of concepts I have tried and tested.
  • Vision / Objectives / Strategy / Tactics (Campbell)
  • The Three Horizons model (McKinsey)
  • Setting a Fuzzy Goal (Gamestorming)
  • The Dilemma Space (Hampden-Turner)
It might go against your biological wiring, but give yourself and your team the opportunity to think about the short- and long-term simultaneously.
That is the key to how the author approaches future planning. Being able to think exponentially and take ongoing incremental actions.
